Painting Description
"The Lover Crowned" is a renowned painting by the French Rococo artist Jean-Honoré Fragonard, completed around 1771-1772. It is part of a series of works known as "The Progress of Love," commissioned by Madame du Barry, the last maîtresse-en-titre of Louis XV, for the Château de Louveciennes. This series is considered one of Fragonard's most significant contributions to 18th-century French painting.
The painting depicts a moment of romantic culmination, where a young man is being crowned with a wreath of flowers by his beloved as a symbol of his conquest in love. The scene is set in an idyllic garden, a typical setting for Rococo art, which often celebrated the carefree aristocratic life and love. The lush surroundings, the playful putti, and the opulent costumes of the figures reflect the indulgent and sensual spirit of the time.
"The Lover Crowned" showcases Fragonard's mastery of vibrant colors, fluid brushwork, and dynamic composition. The artist's ability to convey the textures of fabrics and the softness of the landscape contributes to the overall sensuous and dreamlike quality of the painting. The work is imbued with a sense of intimacy and joy, capturing the essence of romantic love as seen through the Rococo lens.
This painting, along with the other canvases from "The Progress of Love" series, was removed from the Château de Louveciennes after Madame du Barry's execution during the French Revolution. The series was eventually acquired by American industrialist and art collector J.P. Morgan in the early 20th century and was subsequently bequeathed to The Frick Collection in New York City, where "The Lover Crowned" is currently housed and remains a highlight of the museum's collection.
