Painting Description
"The Lover Crowned" (French: "L'Amant couronné") is a renowned painting by the French Rococo artist Jean-Honoré Fragonard, completed between 1771 and 1773. This work is part of a series of paintings known as "The Progress of Love," commissioned by Madame du Barry, the last maîtresse-en-titre of King Louis XV, for the Château de Louveciennes. The series was intended to decorate her new pavilion, designed by the architect Claude Nicolas Ledoux.
"The Lover Crowned" depicts a moment of romantic triumph, as a young artist is shown crowning his beloved with a wreath of flowers, symbolizing his love and adoration. The scene is set in an idyllic garden, a common setting for Fragonard's work, which often celebrated love and the pleasures of life. The painting is characterized by its fluid brushwork, vibrant color palette, and dynamic composition, all of which are hallmarks of Fragonard's mature style.
In the painting, the couple is surrounded by symbols of love and creativity, including the artist's palette and the pastoral setting, which may also reflect the Enlightenment's interest in nature and the natural. The playful and sensuous nature of the work exemplifies the Rococo aesthetic, which favored lighthearted themes, ornate details, and an emphasis on leisure and the aristocracy's indulgence.
"The Lover Crowned" is often noted for its depiction of a joyful and reciprocal love, as the figures share a gaze that suggests mutual affection and respect. This painting, along with the other works in "The Progress of Love" series, was not well-received by Madame du Barry, leading to their replacement and Fragonard's reclamation of the paintings. Despite this initial setback, the series has since been recognized as one of Fragonard's masterpieces and an important contribution to 18th-century French art.
Today, "The Lover Crowned" is held in the collection of the Frick Collection in New York City, where it continues to be admired for its exuberant representation of love and its exquisite execution. The painting remains a testament to Fragonard's skill as a painter and his ability to capture the spirit of his time.
