Painting Description
''Yuzhi Gengzhi Tu'' (御製耕織圖), translated as ''Tilling and Weaving Illustrated'', is a renowned Chinese illustrated book that depicts agricultural and sericultural activities. Commissioned by the Kangxi Emperor of the Qing Dynasty, the work is attributed to the artist Jiao Bingzhen (焦秉貞), a court painter and an official in the Astronomical Bureau. The book was completed in 1696 and is significant for its detailed representation of the processes involved in farming and silk production, which were the economic backbone of China at the time.
The ''Yuzhi Gengzhi Tu'' consists of a series of woodblock prints based on Jiao Bingzhen's paintings, accompanied by poetry composed by the Kangxi Emperor himself. The emperor's involvement in the project underscores the importance of agriculture and sericulture to the state and his role as a benevolent ruler concerned with the livelihood of his subjects. The illustrations are not only artistically accomplished but also serve an educational purpose, demonstrating the idealized harmony between the ruler, the people, and the natural world.
The work is divided into two parts: "Gengzhi Tu" (耕織圖), illustrating the agricultural cycle, from plowing and sowing to harvesting and storing; and "Zhi Tu" (織圖), showing the various stages of silk production, including the cultivation of mulberry trees, the rearing of silkworms, and the weaving of silk fabric. The images are rich in detail and provide valuable insights into the technology and social organization of rural China during the late 17th century.
''Yuzhi Gengzhi Tu'' is considered a masterpiece of Qing Dynasty art and an important cultural artifact. It offers a window into the agrarian life of the period, reflecting the Confucian ideal of a well-ordered and moral society where agriculture is revered as the foundation of civilization. The book has been studied for its historical, artistic, and technological significance and remains a key source for understanding the period's socio-economic conditions.
The ''Yuzhi Gengzhi Tu'' has been reproduced and reinterpreted in various forms over the centuries, attesting to its enduring influence on Chinese art and culture. It is preserved in several editions, including some with colored illustrations, and can be found in major libraries and museums with collections of Chinese art and history.
