Yue Dai Paintings

Yue Minjun is a contemporary Chinese artist born in 1973 in Daqing, Heilongjiang, China. He is best known for his oil paintings depicting himself in various settings, frozen in laughter. His work is often classified as part of the Cynical Realism movement, which emerged in China after the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre. Despite the seemingly joyous expressions of his figures, Yue's work is deeply introspective and critiques the societal and political landscape of contemporary China.

Yue Minjun's artistic journey began in the early 1990s, a period marked by significant upheaval and change in China. After studying oil painting at the Hebei Normal University, he moved to Beijing, where he became part of a community of avant-garde artists living in the Yuanmingyuan artists' village.
