William Shiels was a Scottish artist born in 1783 in St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland. He was known for his animal paintings and for his work as a portrait artist. Shiels was the son of a shipmaster, which may have contributed to the early development of his perspective on life and art. He pursued his interest in art by training at the Trustees’ Academy in Edinburgh, where he studied under Sir Henry Raeburn, a leading Scottish portrait painter of the time.
Shiels initially made a name for himself with his portraits, but he would eventually become most associated with his realistic depictions of animals, especially livestock. He was particularly adept at capturing the characteristics of different breeds, which was of significant interest during the agricultural revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. His detailed paintings of cattle, sheep, and dogs were not only appreciated for their artistic merit but also served as valuable records of the various breeds.
In the 1830s, Shiels was commissioned by the Highland Society of Scotland to paint a series of pictures representing the ‘Prize Animals’ of Scotland. This project took him across the country, where he painted the animals on their own farms. The resulting collection of paintings provides a unique historical record of the agricultural heritage of Scotland.
Shiels' works were exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, of which he was a regular member. His paintings are characterized by their attention to detail, vivid portrayal of textures, and the lifelike quality of the subjects. Unlike some of his contemporaries, Shiels preferred to work from life rather than from preparatory sketches, which contributed to the immediacy and accuracy of his depictions.
William Shiels passed away in 1857. Today, his work is held in various collections, including the National Galleries of Scotland, which holds some of the 'Prize Animals' series, and his paintings continue to be of interest to those studying the history of animal husbandry, the development of livestock breeds, and the genre of animal painting in art history.
