Painting Description
"Marriage à la Mode: 2. The Tête à Tête" is the second painting in the series of six satirical paintings known as "Marriage à la Mode" created by the English painter and printmaker William Hogarth. Painted in 1743, the series serves as a pointed critique of the arranged marriages among the aristocracy of the 18th century, highlighting the moral laxity and superficial values of the upper classes. Each painting in the series tells a part of the story of the ill-fated marriage between the son of a financially depleted earl and the daughter of a wealthy but socially inferior city merchant.
In "The Tête à Tête," Hogarth depicts the disillusionment and indifference that have settled into the marriage. The scene takes place in the couple's lavishly decorated home, yet the opulence of the surroundings only serves to underscore the emptiness of their relationship. The husband slouches wearily in his chair, seemingly exhausted from a night of debauchery, as indicated by the disarray of his attire and the broken sword at his feet—a symbol of impotence and failed masculinity. The wife, equally disengaged, sits opposite him, her posture and expression one of boredom and disdain. A small dog sniffs at a lady's cap in the husband's pocket, suggesting infidelity.
The room itself is in disarray, with paintings hanging askew and a steward looking over the bills, hinting at the couple's financial recklessness. The painting is rich in allegory and symbolism, with each element carefully chosen to convey the moral and social commentary for which Hogarth was renowned.
As a work of art, "The Tête à Tête" is celebrated for its intricate narrative detail and its role in the development of genre painting. It is a prime example of Hogarth's skill in using visual storytelling to critique and satirize the society of his time. The series, including "The Tête à Tête," is considered one of Hogarth's masterpieces and remains an important cultural artifact that offers insight into the mores and social dynamics of 18th-century England.
