Painting Description
''Marriage A-la-Mode: Six Plates'' is a series of satirical paintings created by the English painter and engraver William Hogarth between 1743 and 1745. The series, which was later engraved and published in print form, consists of six scenes that form a narrative arc, critiquing the upper-class society of Hogarth's time, particularly the arranged marriages among the aristocracy for monetary and social gain.
The story depicted in the series follows the arranged marriage between the son of a financially strapped nobleman, the Earl of Squanderfield, and the daughter of a wealthy but socially inferior city merchant. The narrative unfolds with each successive scene, illustrating the disastrous consequences of a marriage based on financial interests rather than affection or compatibility. Hogarth's work is renowned for its rich detail, biting social commentary, and the use of visual metaphors, which convey the moral degradation and hypocrisy of the characters involved.
The first plate, "The Marriage Settlement," sets the stage with the negotiation between the two fathers, while the subsequent plates—"The Tête à Tête," "The Inspection," "The Toilette," "The Bagnio," and "The Lady's Death"—depict the progressive moral and physical decline of the couple and their eventual tragic end. The series culminates in the death of both the husband and wife, leaving behind a child who is afflicted with syphilis, inherited from his father.
Hogarth's ''Marriage A-la-Mode'' is considered one of his most significant and sophisticated works, offering a scathing critique of the mercenary marriages and moral decay of the 18th-century aristocracy. The series is celebrated for its intricate storytelling, dark humor, and its pioneering role in the development of sequential art. Today, the original paintings are held by the National Gallery in London, and the series remains a valuable historical document, providing insight into the social mores and conditions of Georgian England.
