Painting Description
"A Rake's Progress II: The Levee" is the second in a series of eight paintings by the English artist William Hogarth, titled "A Rake's Progress," created in 1732–1734. The series depicts the decline and fall of Tom Rakewell, the son of a rich merchant who comes into his inheritance and moves to London, where he squanders his wealth, engages in immoral activities, and ultimately meets a tragic end. In "The Levee," Hogarth portrays Rakewell at the height of his apparent success and social standing, surrounded by various professionals and sycophants who are eager to take advantage of his wealth and naivety.
The scene is set in Rakewell's fashionable London townhouse, where he is being attended to by a tailor, a music master, a fencing master, a dancing master, and a landscape gardener, among others. Each character in the painting represents a different vice or folly, from vanity to flattery to deceit, and their exaggerated expressions and postures contribute to the satirical tone of the work. Hogarth's attention to detail and use of symbolism provide a rich commentary on the moral decay and social pretensions of the time.
Hogarth's "A Rake's Progress" series was well-received and popular in its day, leading to the production of engravings that allowed the moral tale to reach a wider audience. "The Levee" serves as a critical observation of the excesses of the upper classes and the corrupting influence of wealth and urban life. The series as a whole is considered a masterpiece of narrative painting and a seminal work in the genre of moralistic satirical art.
The original paintings of "A Rake's Progress," including "The Levee," are held in the collection of Sir John Soane's Museum in London. The series remains an important cultural artifact, offering insight into 18th-century English society and the enduring human themes of temptation, vice, and downfall.
