Painting Description
''Le Jardin de Daubigny'' (Daubigny's Garden) is a series of three paintings created by the Dutch post-impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh. The second painting in the series, created in 1890, is often referred to as ''Le Jardin de Daubigny 2''. This artwork was painted in Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris, where Van Gogh spent the last few months of his life and where he produced many of his most renowned works. The painting is a homage to Charles-François Daubigny, a painter whom Van Gogh greatly admired and who had previously owned the property depicted.
The garden of the late Daubigny provided Van Gogh with a tranquil and picturesque subject during a period of intense emotional turmoil. In ''Le Jardin de Daubigny 2'', Van Gogh's brushwork is characterized by its swirling patterns and vibrant color palette, which includes lush greens, vivid blues, and bursts of floral colors. The composition captures the essence of the garden with a sense of immediacy and intimacy, reflecting Van Gogh's personal connection to nature and his respect for Daubigny's work.
Van Gogh's letters to his brother Theo provide insight into his thoughts and feelings about the painting and his admiration for Daubigny. The artwork is significant not only for its aesthetic qualities but also for its place within Van Gogh's oeuvre, representing a poignant connection between the artist and the traditions of the Barbizon School, with which Daubigny was associated.
''Le Jardin de Daubigny 2'' is part of the collection of the Hiroshima Museum of Art in Japan. The painting continues to be a subject of study for art historians and is appreciated by a global audience for its emotive power and its place within the narrative of Van Gogh's life and artistic development.
