Painting Description
"Irises" is a painting by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh, completed in 1889 during his stay at the asylum of Saint Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, where he lived after a series of mental crises. The work is one of several in a series that Van Gogh painted during this period and is often considered among his greatest masterpieces.
The painting depicts a garden scene filled with vibrant blue irises with one white iris standing out among them, and a background of marigolds and other foliage. Van Gogh's use of bold colors, intense brushwork, and the dynamic movement in the composition reflect the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, which he greatly admired. The painting is characterized by its striking color contrasts and the emotional intensity that Van Gogh is known for.
"Irises" was one of the first paintings Van Gogh started after arriving at the asylum and is believed to convey a sense of calm and a respite from his mental turmoil. The painting was created before his first major attack at the asylum, and it is thought that the act of painting provided a therapeutic outlet for him.
The artwork measures 71 cm x 93 cm and is currently housed in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California, after being sold for a record price at auction in 1987. "Irises" has been the subject of extensive art historical research and is frequently exhibited, allowing the public to appreciate one of the seminal works of post-impressionism and gain insight into Van Gogh's artistic vision during the final years of his life.
