Victor Tardieu was a significant French painter, born in 1870 in Lyon, France. He was an influential figure in the early 20th-century art scene, particularly noted for his role in founding the École des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine (Indochina Fine Arts College) in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 1925. This institution played a critical role in the development of modern art in Vietnam and fostered the emergence of several prominent Vietnamese artists. Tardieu's career began in France, where he was deeply involved in the artistic movements of his time, honing his skills in the academies of Paris. He was a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was trained under the guidance of notable instructors such as Fernand Cormon.

Tardieu's artwork was recognized for its quality and depth, earning him accolades, including the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1903, which allowed him to study at the Villa Medici in Rome, an opportunity that significantly influenced his artistic development.
