Victor (Crafty) Geruzez Paintings

Victor Geruzez, better known by his pseudonym Crafty, was a French illustrator and caricaturist born on January 13, 1837, in Passy, Paris. He was most active during the second half of the 19th century, a period that was rich in political and social change in France. Crafty is often remembered for his satirical takes on contemporary events and figures, which were popular during the volatile years of the French Third Republic.

Crafty began his artistic career relatively late. Before turning to art, he served in the military, a background that would later influence his work. His military service included participation in the Italian campaign under Napoleon III during the Second French Empire. After leaving the military, he turned his attention to drawing and illustration, quickly gaining recognition for his sharp wit and keen observational skills.

The majority of Crafty's work consisted of caricatures and illustrations for various periodicals such as 'Le Charivari', 'La Vie Parisienne', and 'Le Monde Illustré'. His style was characterized by a keen eye for detail and an ability to capture the essence of his subjects with a few deft strokes. He often focused on the foibles of the bourgeoisie and the political class, using his art as a vehicle for social commentary.

In addition to his work in periodicals, Crafty also illustrated several books, often collaborating with prominent writers of the day. He was a contemporary of other famous French caricaturists like Honoré Daumier and Gustave Doré, and while he may not have achieved the same level of fame as some of his peers, his contributions to the art of caricature and illustration were significant.

Crafty continued to work up until his death on February 10, 1895, in Bois-Colombes, France. His legacy lives on through his humorous and sometimes biting illustrations, which capture the spirit of a turbulent era in French history. Although not as widely known today, his work remains of interest to historians and collectors, offering insight into the social and political life of 19th-century France.
