He was a prominent figure in the art world of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly known for his contributions to the development of Ukrainian national art and for his pedagogical work.

Krichevskiy began his artistic education at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he studied under influential artists such as Valentin Serov and Isaac Levitan. After completing his studies in Moscow, Krichevskiy continued his education abroad. He traveled to Munich, a major European art center at the time, to attend the private school of Anton Ažbe, where he further honed his skills and absorbed the influences of Western European art.

Upon returning to the Russian Empire, Krichevskiy became actively involved in the artistic life of Kyiv. He was a founding member of the Society of South Russian Artists and later the Ukrainian State Academy of Arts, where he served as a professor and mentor to many young artists. His work during this period was characterized by a strong nationalistic sentiment, as Krichevskiy sought to develop a distinct Ukrainian style, incorporating elements of folk art and the rich cultural heritage of his homeland.
