Painting Description
"Rokuju Yoshu Meisho Zue" (六十余州名所図会), also known as "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces," is a series of ukiyo-e prints by the renowned Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige, also known as Ando Hiroshige. Created between 1853 and 1856, the series comprises a collection of 70 landscape prints, each depicting a different province of Japan, plus a title page. Hiroshige's work is celebrated for its masterful composition, delicate use of color, and the ability to evoke the atmosphere of each location.
The series was commissioned during a period when travel was becoming more accessible in Japan, and interest in the country's diverse landscapes was growing among the urban population. Each print in the series represents a view from one of the provinces of Japan, which were historically known as "kuni" and numbered over sixty, hence the name "Sixty-odd Provinces." Hiroshige's prints often include famous landmarks, local festivals, and other culturally significant elements that offer a glimpse into the life and environment of each region.
Hiroshige's artistic style in "Rokuju Yoshu Meisho Zue" is characterized by the use of perspective and innovative compositions that were influenced by Western art, which was slowly being introduced to Japan at the time. The prints are also notable for their poetic titles and the inclusion of kyoka, humorous or whimsical poems that complement the scenes depicted.
The series is one of Hiroshige's last major works before his death in 1858 and is considered an important part of his artistic legacy. "Rokuju Yoshu Meisho Zue" remains highly regarded for its historical value and its contribution to the development of landscape art in Japan. The prints are collected and studied for their aesthetic qualities and as a record of Japan's cultural and geographic diversity during the Edo period.
