Painting Description
Keisai Eisen (渓斎 英泉, 1790–1848) was a prominent Japanese ukiyo-e artist, known for his bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) and his contributions to the genre of woodblock prints during the Edo period. Born as Ikeda Yoshinobu in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Eisen was the son of a noted calligrapher, Ikeda Masabe. He initially trained under the Kanō school of painting but later shifted his focus to ukiyo-e, studying under Kikugawa Eizan, a master of bijin-ga.
Eisen's work is characterized by its delicate and intricate lines, as well as its vibrant use of color. His bijin-ga often depicted courtesans and geisha, capturing the elegance and beauty of these women with a keen eye for detail. Eisen's portrayal of women was noted for its realism and sensuality, setting his work apart from his contemporaries. In addition to bijin-ga, Eisen also produced landscapes, shunga (erotic prints), and illustrations for popular literature.
One of Eisen's most significant contributions to ukiyo-e was his involvement in the production of the "Famous Views of the Eastern Capital" (Tōto Meisho), a series of landscape prints that he worked on alongside other renowned artists such as Utagawa Hiroshige. This series showcased various famous locations in Edo, blending the beauty of nature with the bustling life of the city.
Eisen's personal life was marked by turbulence; he faced financial difficulties and struggled with alcoholism. Despite these challenges, he remained a prolific artist until his death in 1848. His work continues to be celebrated for its artistic merit and its insightful portrayal of Edo-period society. Eisen's legacy endures through his prints, which are held in numerous prestigious collections worldwide, including the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
