Ubaldo Gandolfi was an Italian painter and printmaker, born in 1728 in San Matteo della Decima, a small town near Bologna, Italy. He was part of a family of artists, with his brother Gaetano Gandolfi also being a well-regarded painter of the time. Ubaldo initially trained under Felice Torelli, a prominent painter of the Bolognese School, before moving to study at the Accademia Clementina in Bologna, where he honed his skills further.

Gandolfi's work is characterized by its robust modeling, vigorous chiaroscuro, and a certain emotional intensity. He was influenced by the Baroque masters of his time and was known for his ability to blend traditional Bolognese styles with the dynamism of the High Baroque. His oeuvre includes a range of subjects, from religious scenes and mythological episodes to portraits and genre scenes.

In the 1750s, Gandolfi began receiving commissions for religious works in Bologna and the surrounding region. His reputation grew as he created altarpieces and frescoes for various churches. One of his notable works is the ceiling of the Palazzo Marescalchi in Bologna, which showcases his mastery of fresco painting and his capacity to create dramatic, illusionistic spaces.

Throughout his career, Gandolfi was also an esteemed teacher. He taught at the Accademia Clementina, where he had once been a student, influencing a new generation of Bolognese artists. His style evolved later in life to incorporate some of the neoclassical tendencies that were becoming popular, but he always retained a certain Baroque sensibility in his compositions.

Ubaldo Gandolfi's artistic legacy is somewhat overshadowed by the work of his brother Gaetano and his nephew Mauro Gandolfi, who also became prominent artists. Nevertheless, Ubaldo's contributions to Italian art of the 18th century are significant, and his works can be found in museums and collections in Italy and beyond.
