Tobias Verhaecht, born Tobias van Haecht, was a Flemish painter and draughtsman who specialized in landscape paintings and was known for his large panoramic views. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1561, he was part of the Northern Renaissance movement that was prominent in the region during the 16th and early 17th centuries. Verhaecht was also known as Tobias Verhaegt, Tobias Verhaecht, or Tobias van Haecht in various records.

Verhaecht received his initial artistic training from his father, who was a painter. He continued his education in Italy, where he stayed for several years, most notably in Rome. During his time in Italy, he was influenced by the works of Italian Renaissance masters and the Roman topography, which had a significant impact on his style. His Italian experiences would play a crucial role in the development of his personal style, characterized by a grandeur sense of scale and classical composition.

After his return to Antwerp in the late 1580s, Verhaecht became a master in the Guild of St. Luke, which was the city's painters' guild. He was also the first teacher of the renowned artist Peter Paul Rubens, who would go on to become one of the most famous painters of the Baroque era. Verhaecht's influence on Rubens, especially in the realm of landscape painting, is considered an important part of Rubens' early artistic development.

Verhaecht's landscapes are distinguished by their detailed depiction of nature and the integration of biblical and mythological scenes. He often painted large-scale landscapes with a high vantage point, giving the viewer a sense of vastness and grandeur. His works were collected by art connoisseurs of the time and contributed to the evolution of landscape painting in the Flemish art tradition.

Despite his contributions to Flemish art and his role as Rubens' first teacher, Tobias Verhaecht did not achieve the same level of fame as his illustrious student. His works have often been overshadowed by those of Rubens and other contemporaries. Nonetheless, his paintings can be found in several museums, and he is recognized for his role in the history of landscape painting.

Tobias Verhaecht passed away in 1631 in Antwerp. His legacy lives on through his contributions to Flemish landscape painting and his influence on one of the greatest artists of the Baroque era, Peter Paul Rubens.
