Painting Description
"Rooftops, Naples" is an 18th-century oil painting by the Welsh landscape painter Thomas Jones (1742–1803). Created in 1782, this work is renowned for its pioneering approach to plein air painting and its departure from the grandiose landscapes that were popular at the time. The painting is a strikingly candid depiction of the humble, everyday scenery visible from Jones's apartment in Naples, Italy, where he lived from 1776 to 1783.
Measuring 43.2 x 48.9 cm, "Rooftops, Naples" captures a close-up view of the flat roofs (or 'terraces') and the surrounding architecture, bathed in the bright Mediterranean sunlight. The composition is notable for its focus on the textures and colors of the building materials, as well as the play of light and shadow, which imbues the scene with a sense of immediacy and realism.
Jones's work on "Rooftops, Naples" marked a significant shift in his artistic style and subject matter. Prior to this, he had primarily produced more conventional and idealized landscapes. However, during his time in Italy, he became increasingly interested in depicting his immediate surroundings with a more naturalistic and personal touch. This painting is considered one of the finest examples of his innovative approach to landscape art and is often cited as a precursor to the Impressionist movement that would emerge nearly a century later.
The painting is held in high esteem for its historical importance and its influence on the development of landscape painting. "Rooftops, Naples" is part of the collection of the National Gallery in London, where it continues to be studied and admired for its unique perspective and contribution to the evolution of Western art.
