Painting Description
''The Voyage of Life'' is a series of four paintings created by Thomas Cole in 1842, representing an allegory of the four stages of human life: childhood, youth, manhood, and old age. The paintings follow a voyager who travels in a boat on a river through the mid-19th-century American wilderness. In each painting, accompanied by a guardian angel, the voyager rides the boat on the River of Life. The landscapes, corresponding to the seasons of the year, play a major role in telling the story.
In ''Childhood'', the infant voyager is seen at the beginning of his journey, with the river emanating from a dark cave. The landscape is lush; everything is calm and basking in the warm light of dawn, symbolizing the innocence and joy of youth. In ''Youth'', the youth takes control of the boat and aims for a shining castle in the sky, representing the romantic aspirations and illusions of adolescence and early adulthood. However, the castle, like youthful dreams, is an illusion.
In the third painting, ''Manhood'', the adult faces the trials of life. The boat is damaged and the tiller is gone. The river has become a terrible rush of white water with menacing rocks, dangerous whirlpools, and surging currents. The warm sunlight of the past paintings is replaced by a cool, uncertain light, and the angel appears high in the sky, still watching but seemingly distant. Finally, in ''Old Age'', the voyager reaches the end of his journey as the river calms, the celestial light illuminates the sky, and the earthly landscape recedes. The angel is seen close once again, signaling the end of the earthly journey and the beginning of the spiritual one.
Cole's ''The Voyage of Life'' series is an exemplary representation of American landscape painting and is considered an allegorical expression of the Christian doctrine of death and salvation. The paintings were well received in Cole's time and continue to be seen as significant works of American art. They are currently housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
