Painting Description
"The Raising of Lazarus" is a monumental oil painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Sebastiano del Piombo, completed between 1517 and 1519. The work, which measures approximately 380.5 cm × 289.5 cm (149.8 in × 114.0 in), is housed in the National Gallery, London. It depicts the biblical episode of Jesus Christ resurrecting Lazarus from the dead, as narrated in the Gospel of John, chapter 11.
Sebastiano del Piombo, born Sebastiano Luciani in Venice, was influenced by the coloristic brilliance of Venetian painting and the monumental forms of Roman art, having worked closely with both Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione, and later, in Rome, with Michelangelo. "The Raising of Lazarus" is considered one of his masterpieces and is notable for its dramatic interpretation of the subject matter, the complex composition, and the use of chiaroscuro to enhance the emotional intensity of the scene.
The painting was commissioned by Cardinal Giulio de Medici, the later Pope Clement VII, as part of a competition with Raphael, who was simultaneously working on the "Transfiguration." Both works were intended for the Cathedral of Narbonne in France. Sebastiano's painting is particularly remarkable for its vivid characterizations and the dynamic interplay of light and shadow, which serve to heighten the miraculous nature of the event. The influence of Michelangelo is evident in the muscular figures and the expressive intensity of their poses and gestures.
"The Raising of Lazarus" is a significant work in the High Renaissance period, showcasing the exchange of artistic ideas between Venice and Rome and the competitive spirit that drove artists to new heights of creativity. Its presence in the National Gallery since 1824 has allowed it to be studied and admired by generations, contributing to the understanding of Renaissance art and its enduring impact on Western visual culture.
