Painting Description
"Fortitude" (c. 1470) is a celebrated painting by the renowned Italian Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli. This work is part of a series of seven panels depicting the cardinal and theological virtues, which were commissioned for the Tribunale della Mercanzia, the merchants' court in Florence. Botticelli's "Fortitude" is particularly notable as it is the only panel of the series that is attributed with certainty to his hand, with the other panels possibly executed by or with the assistance of other artists from his workshop or contemporaries such as Piero del Pollaiolo.
The painting portrays the allegorical figure of Fortitude, one of the four cardinal virtues, which also include Prudence, Justice, and Temperance. In the context of the Renaissance, these virtues were considered essential moral qualities for both individual conduct and the effective governance of the state. "Fortitude" is depicted as a young woman seated on a throne, clad in armor and holding a rod and a shield, symbolizing the strength and courage required to face adversity and uphold moral convictions.
Measuring 167 cm in height and 87 cm in width, the tempera on panel artwork is characterized by Botticelli's graceful linear style, with the figure's elegant posture and the flowing drapery of her garments. The use of color and the detailed rendering of textures, such as the intricate patterns on the throne and the gleam of the armor, reflect Botticelli's mastery of the medium and his ability to convey both physical and symbolic attributes.
Today, "Fortitude" is housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy, where it continues to be admired for its beauty and its embodiment of Renaissance humanist ideals. The painting is a significant example of Botticelli's early work and contributes to our understanding of the artistic and cultural milieu of Florence during the latter half of the 15th century.
