Vice Admiral Robert FitzRoy FRS (5 July 1805 – 30 April 1865) was an English officer of the Royal Navy and a scientist He achieved lasting fame as the captain of the HMS Beagle during Charles Darwin's famous voyage, Darwin's expedition of 1834-36. He was a pioneering meteorologist who made substantial contributions to the scientific of weather. Later in his career, FitzRoy served as the second governor of New Zealand from 1843 to 1845.
Born into the aristocratic family of the Dukes Grafton, FitzRoy had a privileged upbringing that educated him in various disciplines. He embarked on a naval career early in life and by his mid-20s became the youngest captain in the Royal Navy. Among his most significant voyages was the second survey expedition of the ship HMS Beagle in 1834, where he was joined by Charles Darwin.
The partnership with Darwin lasted the entirety of the ship’s journey, establishing a lasting legacy of scientific discovery. Notably, FitzRoy played a pivotal role in the development of meteorology as a science. He invented a simple barometer and promoted its use widely in the shipping industry for weather prediction.
