Painting Description
"De Witt Clinton" is an oil on canvas portrait by the American artist Samuel Finley Breese Morse, painted in 1826. The painting depicts De Witt Clinton (1769–1828), an influential American politician who served as a United States Senator, Mayor of New York City, and as the sixth Governor of New York. He is perhaps best known for his instrumental role in the construction of the Erie Canal, a project that significantly contributed to the economic development and expansion of the United States during the early 19th century.
Morse, who later became famous for his contribution to the invention of the single-wire telegraph system and the co-inventor of Morse code, was also an accomplished painter and a prominent figure in the American art scene of the early 19th century. He was one of the founders of the National Academy of Design and served as its first president.
The portrait of De Witt Clinton is considered one of Morse's significant works in his artistic career. It captures Clinton in a dignified pose, dressed in formal attire, and reflects the neoclassical style that was prevalent during the period. The painting not only commemorates an important political figure but also serves as an example of Morse's skill and versatility as an artist before he turned his focus to invention and technology.
The "De Witt Clinton" portrait is not only a work of art but also a historical document, reflecting the esteem in which Clinton was held during his lifetime and preserving his likeness for posterity. The painting is part of the collection of the New-York Historical Society in New York City, where it continues to be studied and appreciated by both art historians and the general public.
