Painting Description
The Rimpa School (琳派, Rinpa) is one of the major historical schools of Japanese painting. It was founded in Kyoto in the 17th century and is characterized by its decorative style with bold, natural themes including birds, plants, and flowers. The school is also known for its use of gold and silver foil in the background of its compositions, which adds a distinctive opulence to the artwork.
Sakai Hōitsu (酒井 抱一, 1761–1828) was a prominent Japanese painter of the Edo period who played a significant role in the revival of the Rimpa School. Born into a samurai family, Hōitsu was not only a painter but also a poet and an art connoisseur. He was deeply influenced by the works of earlier Rimpa artists, especially Ogata Kōrin (1658–1716), and dedicated himself to the study and revival of Kōrin's style.
Hōitsu's contribution to the Rimpa School was significant. He brought a renewed interest in the school's techniques and aesthetics during a time when it was at risk of fading into obscurity. His own works are characterized by the same lavish use of color and gold leaf that defined the Rimpa style, but he also introduced his own innovations and a certain level of individuality to his paintings.
One of Hōitsu's most important contributions to the Rimpa School was his compilation of the "Ogata Kōrin Hyakuzu" (小形光琳百図, "One Hundred Pictures by Kōrin"), which was a collection of Kōrin's designs that helped to preserve and disseminate the master's style. Hōitsu's efforts in promoting the Rimpa aesthetic led to a resurgence of interest in the style, influencing subsequent generations of artists, including his student and successor, Suzuki Kiitsu (1796–1858).
Hōitsu's works are now considered to be among the finest examples of later Rimpa School painting, and they continue to be celebrated for their beauty and historical significance. His paintings are held in high esteem and can be found in major art collections both in Japan and around the world.
