Rhoda Holmes Nicholls was an English-born American painter who is known for her watercolor artworks and contributions to the art communities in the United States and abroad. Born in Coventry, England, in 1854, she showed early promise in the arts and went on to study at the South Kensington Art School in London. She was well recognized for her talent and received several awards and scholarships that allowed her to refine her skills in Paris and Italy.

Nicholls moved to the United States in the 1880s, where she continued to develop her career as an artist. She married Burr H. Nicholls, an architect, and settled in New York City. Her works were primarily in watercolor, though she was also proficient in oils and other mediums. Nicholls was known for her landscapes, floral pieces, and figures, often imbued with a delicate and sensitive quality that reflected her mastery of watercolor techniques.

She participated in numerous exhibitions and won several medals and honors for her work, including recognition at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. She served as an instructor at the Woman's Art School of Cooper Union for twenty years, and she was also associated with the Art Students League of New York.

Beyond teaching, Nicholls was instrumental in establishing the American Water Color Society and served as one of its jurors. Her influence extended internationally as she exhibited her work in England and Italy, connecting with global art trends and promoting transatlantic artistic exchange. Despite facing the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated field, Nicholls established a respected reputation and enjoyed a successful career.
