Painting Description
"The Tribute Money" is a painting by the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn, created in 1635 during the artist's early period in Amsterdam. This work is not to be confused with the similarly named fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Masaccio. Rembrandt's painting depicts a scene from the New Testament, specifically from the Gospel of Matthew (22:15-22), where the Pharisees attempt to trap Jesus with a question about the lawfulness of paying taxes to the Roman Emperor. Jesus responds by asking whose likeness is on the coin used for the tax, to which they answer "Caesar's." He then delivers the famous line, "Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's."
The painting is renowned for its dramatic use of light and shadow, a technique known as chiaroscuro, which Rembrandt mastered and for which he is particularly famous. In "The Tribute Money," this technique emphasizes the moral and spiritual dimensions of the biblical story, highlighting the figures' expressions and the psychological moment of the encounter.
Measuring approximately 32 inches by 42 inches, the oil on canvas painting is part of the collection at the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden, Germany. It is a prime example of Rembrandt's skill in storytelling through art, as well as his ability to convey complex religious and ethical narratives in a single, compelling visual scene.
As a significant work by one of the most important artists in Western art history, "The Tribute Money" continues to be studied and admired for its artistic merit and its rich interpretation of a biblical episode. The painting is a testament to Rembrandt's profound impact on the development of art in the Baroque period and his enduring legacy in the history of European painting.
