Painting Description
The "Crucifixion (Città di Castello Altarpiece)" is a significant early Renaissance painting by the Italian master Raphael, completed around 1502-1503. This artwork, also known as the "Mond Crucifixion" due to its previous ownership by the Mond family, is notable for its display of Raphael's developing style and his interpretation of religious themes influenced by his predecessors, such as Perugino, his teacher.
The altarpiece was originally commissioned for the church of San Domenico in Città di Castello, a town in the Umbria region of Italy. It is a relatively small oil painting on wood panel, measuring 283.3 cm × 167.3 cm (111.5 in × 65.9 in), and is now housed in the National Gallery, London, having been acquired by the gallery in 1898.
In the painting, Raphael depicts the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist, who are shown in deep mourning. Above the cross, God the Father is represented in a burst of light, surrounded by angels, while the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, descends towards Christ. The figures are set against a darkened sky that suggests the solemnity of the event, and the landscape below hints at the Umbrian countryside, blending divine and earthly realms.
The "Crucifixion (Città di Castello Altarpiece)" is particularly admired for its balanced composition, serene figures, and the use of color and light, which would become hallmarks of Raphael's mature work. The painting is an important example of Raphael's early development as an artist and his contributions to the High Renaissance style. It reflects both his mastery of the human form and his ability to convey complex theological ideas through art, making it a valuable piece for both art historians and admirers of Renaissance painting.
