Painting Description
The "Transfiguration" is a renowned masterpiece by the Italian High Renaissance artist Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio of Urbino). Painted between 1516 and 1520, it is widely considered one of Raphael's greatest works and a pivotal piece in the history of Western art. The painting was commissioned by Cardinal Giulio de' Medici, who later became Pope Clement VII, for the Cathedral of Narbonne in France. However, it remained in Rome after Raphael's untimely death in 1520 and was displayed in the church of San Pietro in Montorio before being moved to the Vatican Museums, where it resides today.
The "Transfiguration" is notable for its complex composition and dual narrative structure, which juxtaposes two distinct biblical episodes. The upper part of the painting depicts the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor, as described in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Christ is shown in a radiant, divine form, flanked by the prophets Moses and Elijah, while the apostles Peter, James, and John are depicted in awe and wonder below. This scene is bathed in ethereal light, symbolizing the divine nature of Christ.
In stark contrast, the lower part of the painting illustrates the subsequent episode of the healing of a possessed boy, which is characterized by dramatic tension and human suffering. The apostles, unable to heal the boy in Christ's absence, are depicted in a state of confusion and desperation, highlighting the limitations of human ability without divine intervention. This duality serves to emphasize the contrast between the divine and the earthly, the miraculous and the mundane.
Raphael's "Transfiguration" is celebrated for its masterful use of color, light, and composition, which together create a dynamic and emotionally charged narrative. The painting's intricate details and profound symbolism have been the subject of extensive scholarly analysis and continue to captivate audiences, making it a quintessential example of Renaissance art and a testament to Raphael's enduring legacy.
