Painting Description
"The Transfiguration" is a masterpiece of High Renaissance art by Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known as Raphael, a prominent Italian painter and architect of the period. Created between 1516 and 1520, this painting is notable for being the last work by Raphael, as he died in 1520 at the age of 37. The painting was commissioned by Cardinal Giulio de Medici, who later became Pope Clement VII, and was intended for Narbonne Cathedral in France.
The artwork is renowned for its complex composition and profound use of color and light, which exemplify Raphael's skillful blending of earthly and divine themes. The painting is divided into two distinct sections: the upper part depicts the biblical scene of the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor, where he appears radiant in white clothing alongside prophets Moses and Elijah. The lower part of the painting presents a contrasting scene where the Apostles attempt to heal a possessed boy, highlighting their inability to perform miracles without Jesus' presence.
"The Transfiguration" measures 405 cm × 278 cm (159 in × 109 in) and is currently housed in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, Vatican City. This painting is often celebrated as one of the greatest Renaissance paintings, encapsulating the ideals of the period's art and serving as an influential piece in the development of Western art. It skillfully conveys theological messages and human emotions, bridging the gap between human experiences and divine intervention.
