Painting Description
"The Madonna of the Pinks" (Italian: "La Madonna dei Garofani") is a small oil painting by the Italian High Renaissance artist Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio of Urbino), created around 1506-1507. The painting depicts the Virgin Mary playing with the Christ child and giving him carnations (pinks). The carnation is a symbol that has been traditionally associated with the Passion of Christ, hinting at his future suffering. This intimate and tender representation is a fine example of Raphael's ability to convey complex theological ideas through emotionally resonant and graceful compositions.
The painting's provenance was long disputed, with its attribution to Raphael being a matter of debate until the late 20th century. It was once part of the collection of the Duke of Northumberland and housed at Alnwick Castle, but its Raphael authorship was only firmly established after scientific analysis and scholarly research in the 1990s. The National Gallery in London eventually acquired "The Madonna of the Pinks" in 2004, following a high-profile fundraising campaign to prevent its sale to the Getty Museum in California.
Measuring just 27.9 cm × 22.4 cm (11 in × 8.8 in), the painting is noted for its exquisite detail and the delicate modeling of the figures, characteristics of Raphael's work during his Florentine period. The composition's warmth and immediacy suggest the influence of Leonardo da Vinci, whom Raphael had studied closely during his time in Florence. "The Madonna of the Pinks" is a significant work in Raphael's oeuvre, showcasing his mastery of human emotion and his contribution to the development of the Madonna and Child genre in Renaissance art.
