Painting Description
"Madonna della Seggiola" or "Madonna della Sedia" is a renowned oil on panel painting by the Italian High Renaissance artist Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino), created circa 1513-1514. The artwork depicts the Virgin Mary embracing the child Christ, while the young John the Baptist devoutly watches. The composition's circular format, known as a tondo, enhances the intimate and familial atmosphere of the scene.
The painting is celebrated for its warm color palette and the tender, maternal bond it captures between Mary and Jesus, a departure from the more formal and distant depictions of the Byzantine tradition. Raphael's skill in rendering the three-dimensional forms and the soft, gentle faces of the figures is evident, showcasing his mastery of chiaroscuro and the sfumato technique, which was also employed by his contemporary, Leonardo da Vinci.
"Madonna della Seggiola" is notable for its portrayal of the subjects in a close, cropped space, bringing the viewer into a personal encounter with the holy figures. The composition's circular form, along with the positioning of the figures, creates a sense of movement and harmony. The Virgin's gaze out of the painting invites contemplation, while the intricate patterns of her clothing and the chair (seggiola) contrast with the smooth skin of the infants, adding to the painting's visual richness.
This work is one of Raphael's most famous Madonnas and is often cited as an example of his ability to blend divine subjects with the naturalistic and human approach characteristic of the Renaissance. The "Madonna della Seggiola" remains an enduring symbol of Raphael's artistic legacy and is currently housed in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence, as part of the collection of the Galleria Palatina.
