Painting Description
"La Pêche Miraculeuse" (The Miraculous Draught of Fishes) is a celebrated work attributed to Raffaello Sanzio of Urbino, known as Raphael, one of the most prominent artists of the Italian Renaissance. This artwork is part of a series of ten tapestries designed by Raphael for the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, commissioned by Pope Leo X. The tapestries were intended to be hung on the lower walls of the chapel, beneath the frescoes of scenes from the life of Christ and Moses painted by artists such as Michelangelo and Botticelli.
Created around 1515-1516, "La Pêche Miraculeuse" illustrates a biblical scene from the Gospel of Luke (5:1-11), where Jesus performs a miracle by enabling Simon Peter and his fellow fishermen to catch a vast number of fish. This event is significant in Christian tradition as it symbolizes the apostles' transition from fishermen to fishers of men, following Jesus and spreading his teachings.
Raphael's design for the tapestry showcases his mastery of composition, movement, and expression, capturing the astonishment of the fishermen and the serene confidence of Jesus. The original cartoons (full-scale designs) for the tapestries were executed by Raphael and his workshop in a detailed and precise manner, allowing the weavers to create the final tapestries with a high level of fidelity to Raphael's vision.
The cartoons were sent to the workshop of Pieter van Aelst in Brussels, which was renowned for its tapestry weaving. The choice of Brussels for the weaving highlights the importance of the project, as the city was known for producing tapestries of the highest quality during this period. The tapestries were woven with wool, silk, and gold and silver threads, emphasizing their luxuriousness and the status of their patron.
After their completion, the tapestries were displayed in the Sistine Chapel, where they added to the rich visual narrative of the space. Over the centuries, they have been admired for their artistic and historical significance, representing a high point in the collaboration between artist and craftsman in the Renaissance.
Today, the original cartoons for "La Pêche Miraculeuse" and the other tapestries are preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, having been acquired by Charles I of England in the 17th century. The tapestries themselves have undergone restoration and are occasionally displayed in the Vatican Museums, allowing viewers to appreciate the enduring beauty and craftsmanship of Raphael's designs.
