Painting Description
The 'Stufetta' of Cardinal Bibbiena is a small bathroom in the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican, decorated with frescoes by the Italian Renaissance master Raphael Sanzio, commonly known as Raphael. Commissioned by Cardinal Bernardo Dovizi da Bibbiena in 1516, the stufetta, which translates to "little heated room," served as a private bath and reflects the cardinal's taste for luxury and the humanist interest in classical antiquity.
Raphael's frescoes in the Stufetta are a testament to his mastery of classical themes and his ability to adapt them to contemporary settings. The decoration consists of mythological scenes, grotesques, and other motifs inspired by the rediscovery of the Roman baths, particularly the recently excavated Domus Aurea, the Golden House of Emperor Nero. The iconography includes depictions of Venus and Cupid, showcasing the influence of ancient Roman art and literature on Renaissance aesthetics.
The intimate scale of the room and the sensual nature of the subject matter exemplify the private nature of the space, designed for the personal enjoyment of the cardinal. Raphael's work in the Stufetta of Cardinal Bibbiena is considered one of his lesser-known projects, yet it remains an important example of his versatility and his contributions to the decoration of the Vatican during the High Renaissance.
The Stufetta's frescoes have been praised for their vibrant colors, elegant figures, and the incorporation of Raphael's signature grace and clarity. Despite the challenges of preserving the delicate frescoes in a humid environment, the Stufetta remains an enduring testament to Raphael's artistic genius and the cultural milieu of the papal court during the early 16th century.
