Born on June 9, 1597, in Assendelft, North Holland, Saenredam was the son of an engraver and publisher. He moved to Haarlem at a young age, where he would spend the majority of his life. Saenredam's father died when he was only ten years old, but his connection to the world of art was well established by that point, setting the stage for his future career.

Saenredam is often noted for his precise method of creating artworks. He would first make meticulous architectural drawings and measurements of a church interior, and then use those to create his paintings, often taking creative liberties to enhance the aesthetic appeal. His technique involved a painstaking process that included making detailed preparatory sketches and studies before executing his final works. However, Saenredam's approach to the subject was entirely his own, characterized by an airy lightness and clear, cool color palette that distinguished his work from that of his contemporaries.

Pieter Jansz Saenredam passed away on April 31, 1665, in Haarlem. His legacy includes a body of work that continues to be admired for its technical mastery and its serene, contemplative depiction of architectural spaces. Today, Saenredam's paintings can be found in many prestigious art collections and museums around the world, serving as a lasting testament to his unique vision and contribution to Dutch art.
