Painting Description
''Two Sisters'' (On the Terrace) is an 1881 oil-on-canvas painting by the French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir, which is also known by the title ''On the Terrace''. The painting, which measures 100.5 cm × 81 cm (39.5 in × 31.9 in), depicts two young women sitting on the terrace of the Maison Fournaise restaurant along the Seine river in Chatou, France. The Maison Fournaise was a popular spot among Impressionists for dining and leisure.
The artwork showcases Renoir's signature style of vibrant light and saturated color, which reflects the influence of the Impressionist movement. The two women are portrayed in a candid moment, surrounded by lush foliage and blooming flowers, with the river and a distant landscape forming the backdrop. The elder sister wears a fashionable hat and a blue flannel dress, while the younger sister, dressed in a white frock, holds a basket of wool. Despite the title, the subjects were not actually sisters; the elder is a model named Jeanne Darlot, while the identity of the younger girl remains unknown.
Renoir's focus on the interplay of light, shadow, and reflection, as well as his loose brushwork, imbues the scene with a sense of immediacy and the fleeting quality of a moment captured in time. The painting is celebrated for its depiction of leisure in the late 19th century and is a fine example of Renoir's work during a period when he was transitioning from his earlier style to a more individual approach.
''Two Sisters'' was exhibited at the Seventh Impressionist Exhibition in 1882, one year after it was completed. The painting is currently housed in the Art Institute of Chicago, where it remains an important piece in their collection of Impressionist art. It was a gift to the institute in 1933 by Annie Swan Coburn, who purchased it from Paul Durand-Ruel, the famous art dealer who played a pivotal role in promoting the Impressionists.
