Painting Description
The "Polyptych of the Misericordia" is a significant Renaissance painting by the Italian master Piero della Francesca, created during the period of 1445 to 1462. This polyptych, which is a multi-panelled altarpiece, was commissioned by the Confraternity of Mercy (Compagnia della Misericordia), in the Tuscan town of Borgo San Sepolcro, now known as Sansepolcro, which was the artist's hometown. The central panel of the polyptych, which measures 330 cm at the base and 273 cm in height, depicts the Madonna della Misericordia (Madonna of Mercy) sheltering a group of the confraternity's members under her expansive cloak.
The detail referred to as "Polyptych of the Misericordia (detail-2) 1445-48" likely focuses on a specific section of the larger work, which is composed of several individual panels, each with its own subject matter and artistic merit. The polyptych as a whole is renowned for its use of perspective and Piero della Francesca's meticulous attention to geometry and light, which were innovative at the time and contributed to the development of early Renaissance painting.
The polyptych originally consisted of a large central panel with the Madonna and Child, flanked by side panels depicting various saints. The predella, which is the lowermost part of the altarpiece, featured narrative scenes from the lives of the saints and the Passion of Christ. Over time, the polyptych has undergone various changes, including the separation of its panels. The original frame, which was likely designed by the artist himself, has been lost.
The "Polyptych of the Misericordia" is housed in the Museo Civico of Sansepolcro and remains a testament to Piero della Francesca's profound influence on the art of the Renaissance. The work is admired for its solemnity and the way it reflects the religious fervor and communal identity of the period. The detail from this polyptych would require further specification to provide a more focused description, but the overall significance of the work lies in its embodiment of the humanistic spirit and the technical advancements of 15th-century Italian art.
