Painting Description
"Cephalus and Procris 2" is a notable tapestry from the late 17th century, designed by the French artist Philippe Behagle. Behagle, born in Oudenarde in 1641 and died in Paris in 1705, was a renowned tapestry producer and designer who managed a workshop in Beauvais, France. This particular tapestry is part of a series that depicts the tragic mythological story of Cephalus and Procris, characters from Ovid's "Metamorphoses."
The narrative portrayed in the tapestry follows the story of Cephalus, a hunter who is tricked by the goddess Dawn into suspecting his wife Procris of infidelity. In a tragic twist of fate, Procris is accidentally killed by Cephalus with a javelin that never misses its mark, a gift she had given him out of love and trust. The tapestry captures a moment from this myth, often focusing on the emotional intensity and dramatic climax of the story.
Behagle's work is characterized by its intricate design and the high quality of its weaving, which was executed under his direction at the Beauvais Tapestry Manufactory. The manufactory was established in 1664 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert, finance minister to King Louis XIV, with the aim of competing with the Gobelins Manufactory and the Flemish tapestry industry. Behagle took over the management of the Beauvais workshop in 1684 and remained in charge until his death.
"Cephalus and Procris 2" exemplifies the Baroque style of the period, with its rich colors, dynamic composition, and the emotional depth of its subjects. The tapestry would have been a luxury item, likely commissioned by nobility or royalty for display in a grand residence. Today, it is recognized not only for its artistic merit but also for its historical significance as an example of French tapestry production during the reign of Louis XIV.
The tapestry is part of a larger body of work that reflects the cultural and artistic interests of the late 17th century, including a fascination with classical antiquity and the human condition. As an artifact, it provides insight into the craftsmanship and aesthetic values of the time, as well as the storytelling traditions that have been woven into the fabric of Western art history.
