Peter Johann Raadsig was a Danish painter, born on June 18, 1806, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was primarily known for his landscapes and historical paintings. Raadsig was the son of a naval officer and showed an early interest in art. Encouraged by his family, he began his formal art education at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts at the young age of 14 and studied there from 1820 to 1826.

During his time at the academy, he was heavily influenced by the Danish Golden Age, a period of exceptional creative production in Denmark during the early to mid-19th century, and by artists such as Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. Raadsig's style was characterized by a meticulous approach to detail and a profound fascination with nature and history.

In 1831, Raadsig traveled to Norway to paint landscapes and historical scenes. His works from this period contributed to his reputation, as they were received with great acclaim. He depicted the Norwegian landscape with a romantic sensibility that was typical of the time, capturing the dramatic and varied scenery of the region.

After returning to Denmark, Raadsig continued to work and exhibit his paintings. He also took an interest in teaching and became an influential art educator. Throughout his career, Raadsig received several awards and honors, including the Neuhausen Prize, which was a prestigious Danish award for painting.

Peter Johann Raadsig's historical paintings often dealt with significant events from Danish and Scandinavian history, which he rendered with accuracy and a dramatic flair. One of his most famous works is 'The Signing of the Danish Constitution on June 5, 1849', which captures a pivotal moment in Denmark's transition to a constitutional monarchy.
