Painting Description
"Talisman" by Paul Sérusier is a seminal work in the history of modern art, painted in 1888 and serving as a cornerstone for the Nabis movement, a group of post-impressionist avant-garde artists in France. This small, yet profoundly influential, landscape painting was created under the guidance of Paul Gauguin during Sérusier's visit to Pont-Aven in Brittany. Gauguin's advice to Sérusier, "How do you see these trees? They are yellow. So, put in yellow; this shadow, rather blue, paint it with pure ultramarine; these red leaves? Put in vermilion," led to the creation of "Talisman," a work that embodies the essence of synthetism. Synthetism was an art movement that sought to synthesize the outward appearance of natural forms, the artist's feelings about their subject, and the purity of aesthetic considerations of line, color, and form.
The painting, formally known as "The Aven River at the Bois d'Amour," but more commonly referred to as "Talisman," is a small, almost abstract composition of simplified shapes and bold, unmodulated colors. It is painted on wood, measuring just 27 cm × 21 cm (approximately 10.6 in × 8.3 in). The work breaks away from traditional representational art and anticipates the developments of abstract art in the 20th century.
"Talisman" became a symbol of the Nabis' break from Impressionism and their journey towards abstraction and symbolism. It was not just a painting but a manifesto in itself, advocating for the importance of color and form over the representational values that had dominated European painting. The work was kept by Sérusier in his studio and served as an inspirational object for the Nabis, who would often refer to it in their discussions and writings, hence its nickname "Talisman."
The legacy of "Talisman" extends beyond its immediate impact on the Nabis. It is recognized for its role in the transition from the post-impressionist movements of the late 19th century to the abstract and conceptual art that would dominate the 20th century. Today, "Talisman" is housed in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, where it continues to be studied and admired for its historical significance and its role in the evolution of modern art.
