Painting Description
Noa Noa (petite Planche) is a series of woodcut prints created by French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin during his first trip to Tahiti between 1891 and 1893. The title "Noa Noa" translates to "fragrant" in Tahitian, reflecting Gauguin's attempt to capture the essence and spirit of the Tahitian environment and its inhabitants. This series was conceived as a visual counterpart to Gauguin's travel journal also titled "Noa Noa," which he wrote as a narrative to explain and contextualize his artworks for a European audience unfamiliar with Tahitian culture.
The Noa Noa prints are significant in Gauguin's oeuvre as they mark his departure from traditional European artistic conventions and his embrace of the primitive and exotic. Through these works, Gauguin sought to convey his idealized and sometimes mystical interpretations of life in Tahiti, using bold outlines, stark contrasts, and simplified forms that would later influence the Primitivism movement in modern art.
The petite Planche, or "small board," refers to the specific prints within the Noa Noa series that were executed on a smaller scale compared to others. These works are characterized by their intricate detail and the use of a technique known as 'gouging' where the artist carved directly into the woodblock to create expressive and textured imagery. The petite Planche prints are considered some of Gauguin's most important graphic works, offering insight into his innovative approach to printmaking and his ongoing quest to depict a paradise lost through both visual and textual narratives.
