Painting Description
"Breton Cheerfulness" (French: "La Joie de vivre") is an oil painting by French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin, created in 1888 during his first stay in Pont-Aven, a small village in Brittany, France. This period was significant in Gauguin's career as he was moving away from the Impressionist style towards a more synthesized form of art that would later be known as Symbolism. The painting measures 73 cm × 92 cm (approximately 28.7 inches × 36.2 inches) and is currently housed in the Barber Institute of Fine Arts in Birmingham, England.
The work depicts a group of Breton women dancing in a circle, a traditional scene Gauguin would have witnessed in the region. The composition is characterized by bold, flat areas of color and a lack of perspective, indicative of Gauguin's departure from naturalism and his pursuit of a more expressive, decorative aesthetic. The painting's title, "Breton Cheerfulness," reflects the artist's fascination with the perceived purity and primordial joy found in the rural, "primitive" lifestyle of the Breton people, which he contrasted with the decadence of urban Parisian society.
Gauguin's use of color in "Breton Cheerfulness" is particularly noteworthy; the vivid hues and the way they are juxtaposed against each other demonstrate his interest in the emotional and symbolic qualities of color, which would become a hallmark of his later work. The painting is also significant for its influence on the Nabis, a group of young artists who were inspired by Gauguin's innovative approach to painting during the late 19th century.
"Breton Cheerfulness" is an important work in Gauguin's oeuvre, encapsulating the themes of rural life, the search for an Edenic state, and the exploration of color and form that would dominate his artistic pursuits. The painting is a testament to Gauguin's evolving style and his impact on the trajectory of modern art at the close of the 19th century.
