Painting Description
"Cardplayers" (Les Joueurs de cartes) is a series of oil paintings by the French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Cézanne painted during Cézanne's final period in the early 1890s. The series is considered by critics to be among his most important and complex works. Comprising five paintings of different sizes, numerous studies and sketches, the works depict Provençal peasants immersed in smoking and playing cards.
The paintings vary in size, the number of players, and the setting in which the game takes place. Cézanne's approach to these compositions is noted for its departure from the animated, communal scenes of card players depicted by earlier artists, such as Caravaggio and the Le Nain brothers. Instead, Cézanne's card players are silent, monumental, and absorbed in their game.
Cézanne's methodical approach to the Cardplayers series involved careful, studied brushwork and a palette of muted, earthy colors. The artist's interest in geometric simplification and concentration on the solidity of forms is evident in these works. The figures are composed of broad, heavy planes that give them a sense of permanence and stability, reflecting Cézanne's desire to make out of Impressionism something solid and enduring, like the art of the museums.
The series is seen as a prelude to Cézanne's later work and a significant step towards the development of 20th-century abstract art. Each painting is a masterclass in composition and reveals Cézanne's skill in creating a sense of depth and volume with minimal detail. The Cardplayers series is held in prestigious collections worldwide, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, and the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
The Cardplayers series continues to be a subject of extensive art historical study and interpretation, with scholars exploring its thematic complexity, formal innovations, and its pivotal role in the trajectory of modern art.
