Painting Description
"La Cena in Casa di Levi" or "The Feast in the House of Levi" is a renowned oil painting by the Italian painter Paolo Veronese (1528–1588), completed in 1573. Originally commissioned as a depiction of the Last Supper for the refectory of the Basilica di Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, the painting stirred controversy due to its unconventional portrayal of the biblical scene. The work features a lavish banquet scene with an array of characters, some of whom were deemed by the Inquisition as inappropriate for a religious subject, including German soldiers, dwarfs, and other irreverent figures engaging in what appeared to be a secular feast rather than a solemn religious event.
After being summoned by the Roman Catholic Inquisition, Veronese was ordered to modify the painting. Instead of making the changes, Veronese renamed the piece to "The Feast in the House of Levi," recontextualizing the scene to depict a different biblical event which allowed for the inclusion of the diverse characters shown in the banquet. This strategic renaming effectively circumvented the Inquisition’s demands.
The painting measures approximately 5.55 meters by 12.8 meters and is a significant example of the Mannerist style of the late Renaissance period. It is celebrated for its dramatic use of perspective and detailed, vibrant portrayal of a sumptuous feast. "La Cena in Casa di Levi" remains on display in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, where it continues to be admired for its artistic mastery and historical significance in challenging the constraints imposed by religious authorities of the time.
