Painting Description
"Aktgruppe" is a significant artwork by Swiss artist Otto Friedrich Meyer-Amden. Created during the artist's period of extensive studies on human forms and figures "Aktgruppe" showcases superb draftsmanship and attention to detail.
Meyer-Amden was born in 1885 in Amden, Switzerland, and attended the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich. He later studied at the Stuttgart Academy where he developed a lifelong friendship with fellow student, Oskar Schlemmer. His early work was known for exploring religious themes and geometric abstraction, but, by the mid 1920s, he began a more focused inspection of figurative studies, which included the meticulous examination of human anatomy showcased in "Aktgruppe".
As its title suggests, "Aktgruppe" (which translates to "Nude Group" in English), is a study of nude figures. The work is emblematic of Meyer-Amden's style during this period, focusing on the delicate rendering of human forms and the suggestive interplay between the figures. Despite the nudity, the piece does not convey erotic undertones, but rather emphasizes the natural and ethereal beauty of the human form. As with much of Meyer-Amden's work, "Aktgruppe" displays a strong linearity, with each figure meticulously executed to bring out their distinct forms.
"Aktgruppe" is an exemplary piece of Meyer-Amden's oeuvre, underlining his excellence in drawing and his ability to portray the human figure with transcendent grace and serenity. It remains a pivotal work in understanding the trajectory of his artistic evolution, marking his shift from religious and abstract themes to a heightened focus on the human form.
