Painting Description
"The Last Judgement" by Michelangelo Buonarroti is one of the most impactful and famed frescoes in the world, and dominates the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City Painted between the years 1536 and 1541, during the reign of Pope Clement VII and Paul III, the monumental artwork depicts the Second Coming of Christ and the ultimate judgement of souls, as is detailed in Christian eschatology.
Encompassing dimensions of approximately 44.5 feet by 41 feet, the work is grand in scale and subject matter. It showcases Michelangelo's mastery of human form, which is particularly seen in the figure of Jesus, placed in the center of the composition amongst a multitude of figures. Christ is there as the judge sending the damned to Hell, which is painted on the right, and the blessed to Heaven on the left.
Michelangelo broke with convention by not dressing Christ in the expected regalia, but by depicting him as a younger figure, clothed only in his flowing hair. Around him are the Saints, each identifiable by the attributes of their martyrdom. Michelangelo included some contemporary figures recognized by the people of the time. His depiction of the saved ascending on the left and the damned descending on the right is a powerful portrayal of the Christian belief in the salvation of the soul, with the rise to heaven and the fall into hell vividly depicted in dramatic detail.
Despite some initial criticism, particularly regarding the nudity prevalent in the piece, "The Last Judgement" was and remains a crowning achievement in the scope of Western art. Michelangelo's sophisticated use of color, skillful manipulation of perspective, and exceptional interpretation of a traditional theme served to create a masterpiece of inestimable value. Not only does the fresco demonstrate the sophisticated artistry of Michelangelo, but it also illustrates the religious and societal values of the era in which it was created, marking it as not just a significant piece of art, but a critical historical document as well.
