Painting Description
"The Last Judgment" is a monumental fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti, painted on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. Commissioned by Pope Clement VII and completed under the patronage of Pope Paul III, the work was executed between 1536 and 1541, over two decades after Michelangelo completed the chapel's ceiling frescoes. As one of the most significant works of the High Renaissance, "The Last Judgment" represents the culmination of Michelangelo's artistic philosophy and his mastery of human anatomy.
Covering the entire wall behind the altar, the fresco measures approximately 44 feet by 39 feet (13.4 meters by 11.9 meters) and depicts the Second Coming of Christ and the final and eternal judgment by God of all humanity. The central figure of Christ, with a gesture of his hand, determines the fate of souls, as the saved ascend to heaven on the left side of the composition, while the damned are consigned to the torments of hell on the right.
Michelangelo's dynamic composition is characterized by a complex array of figures, with more than 300 characters, showcasing a variety of emotional expressions and physical poses that reflect the souls' various responses to their eternal destinies. The figures are notable for their muscularity and expressiveness, hallmarks of Michelangelo's style, which influenced the Mannerist movement that followed.
The fresco was a subject of intense controversy upon its unveiling, with some critics decrying the nudity and perceived inappropriateness of the figures for a sacred space. In response to these criticisms, the Council of Trent's decrees on sacred images led to the eventual addition of draperies and coverings, known as "braghe," to some of the figures, a process begun by the artist Daniele da Volterra, hence his nickname "Il Braghettone."
"The Last Judgment" has been widely studied, interpreted, and admired, remaining one of the most iconic works of Western art. Its influence extends beyond art history into literature, theology, and cultural discourse, and it continues to attract scholarly attention and public interest, reflecting Michelangelo's enduring legacy as a master of the Renaissance.
