Painting Description
Maurice Denis (1870–1943) was a prominent French painter, decorative artist, and writer who significantly contributed to the transitional period between impressionism and abstract art. Born in Granville, Manche, Denis was an integral figure in the Symbolist and Les Nabis movements, which sought to emphasize symbolism and spirituality in art. His work is characterized by the use of flat areas of color, decorative aesthetic, and often religious themes.
Denis studied at the Académie Julian in 1888 where he co-founded Les Nabis with fellow students Paul Sérusier, Pierre Bonnard, and others. The group was heavily influenced by the work of Paul Gauguin, and they sought to move away from the naturalistic tendencies of impressionism towards more symbolic and spiritual representations. Denis's theories on art were influential and he is often credited with the phrase, "Remember that a painting—before being a war horse, a nude woman, or some anecdote—is essentially a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order."
In addition to his painting, Denis also worked in a variety of other mediums including lithography, illustration, and public mural painting. He was also a prolific writer and critic, contributing to the understanding and appreciation of art through his theoretical works. His writings, particularly "Definition of Neo-traditionalism" and "Theories of Modern and Non-Modern Art," have had a lasting impact on the discourse of modern art. Denis continued to paint and write until his death in 1943, leaving behind a rich legacy of work that continues to influence artists and scholars today.
