Painting Description
The "Tribute Money" is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance painter Masaccio, also known as Tommaso di Giovanni, created around 1426-27. It is located the Brancacci Chapel of the basilica of Santa Maria del Carmine, Florence, Italy. This fresco is often considered one of Masaccio's finest works and a seminal piece in Western painting for its revolutionary use of perspective and light.
The painting narrates a story from the Gospel of Matthew, in which Jesus, confronted a tax collector, directs Peter to find a coin in a fish's mouth to pay the tax. Masaccio illustrated three separate scenes from this story in the same fresco, unifying them into a single composition by continuous perspective, and demonstrating his mastery of cast shadows and atmospheric effect.
The Tribute Money's notable portrayal of a natural outdoor light source displaying a full day's passage was a significant innovation for that period. Moreover, the work is equally significant for its credible rendering of three-dimensional figures through the use of shading, known as chiaroscuro, further punctuating the artistic progression from the Gothic style to the realism of the Early Renaissance.
Masaccio's works, including the Tribute Money, were to leave a lasting impact on the course of Italian, and European, painting, profoundly influencing many artists, including great masters like Michelangelo. While the Tribute Money tells a Biblical story, it also reflects broader themes of political and religious authority in Renaissance Florence.
