José Joaquim Marques de Oliveira was a Portuguese painter born on October 6, 1853, in Ramalde, a parish in Porto, Portugal. He was one of the most significant figures in Portuguese painting towards the end of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century. Marques de Oliveira showed an early talent for art, leading him to enroll in the Porto Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under João António Correia, a well-respected artist of that time.

After completing his studies in Porto, Marques de Oliveira received a scholarship to further his education in Paris. There, he was influenced by the French academic painting style, characterized by its technical precision and often historical or mythological subject matter. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and worked in the atelier of Alexandre Cabanel, a prominent academic painter.

Marques de Oliveira returned to Portugal in the late 1870s, where he began to incorporate the techniques and styles he learned in Paris into his own work. He painted portraits, landscapes, and historical scenes with a refined naturalism, and his work was marked by a gentle luminosity and a certain poetic quality.
