Painting Description
Jean-Marc Nattier (1685-1766) was a prominent French Rococo painter, renowned for his portraits of the French aristocracy, particularly the ladies of the court of King Louis XV. Born in Paris on March 17, 1685, Nattier was the son of Marc Nattier, a portrait painter, and Marie Courtois, a miniaturist. His early exposure to art through his parents significantly influenced his career path. Nattier initially trained under his father and later studied at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, where he honed his skills and developed a distinctive style characterized by elegance, grace, and a delicate use of color.
Nattier's career took a significant turn when he was commissioned to create portraits of the Russian Imperial family during their visit to Paris in 1717. This opportunity elevated his status and opened doors to numerous commissions from the French nobility. His portraits often depicted his subjects in mythological or allegorical settings, blending realism with idealized beauty, which became a hallmark of his work.
Throughout his career, Nattier enjoyed the patronage of several influential figures, including members of the royal family. His ability to capture the likeness and personality of his sitters, combined with his skillful use of light and shadow, earned him widespread acclaim. Despite facing financial difficulties later in life, Nattier continued to produce remarkable works until his death on November 7, 1766.
Nattier's legacy endures through his contributions to the Rococo movement and his influence on subsequent generations of portrait painters. His works are celebrated for their technical proficiency, refined aesthetic, and the insight they provide into the opulent world of 18th-century French aristocracy.
